Happy Thanksgiving!

I wanted to tell everyone Happy Thanksgiving! It’s easy to get wrapped up in our day to day lives and forget what we are thankful for. Here’s a few things from 2011 that I’m thankful for:

My old job. I started the year off with a job, a boss, and a team that I really liked. If I had to have a job, this was the one I wanted! I got to spend my whole day problem solving, playing with Excel, and looking for bigger and better ways to crunch numbers.

My husband’s job. And him too. Last year, my husband took a huge leap and quit his 9 to 5 job to put all of his time and effort into something he’s really good at: writing. Obviously we were a little scared when he quit his job. We really weren’t sure that he would be able to do enough work to keep the bills paid. However, nearly all day, nearly every day of the week, he’s writing writing writing, and a year and a half later, he’s still going strong. I’m so thankful for him, his talent, and his ambition.

My new job. As I mentioned before, I liked my old job, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do every day for the rest of my life. Because my husband is so amazing, I was able to quit my job in September so I can put all of my effort in to my jewelry and other artistic endeavors.

Friends, family, and fans. I have a pretty cool family. I’m thankful to have each and every one of you in my life. I lost my grandmother this year, but I’m so thankful for the time I got with her. So many people don’t get the opportunity to know their grandparents into their adult years. I’m so thankful she and I were close, and I’m very thankful my grandfather is able to spend Thanksgiving with us. Oh, I also got a new niece this year! She’s still not too sure about me, but I’m excited to get to know her as she grows up.

I have a fabulous network of friends! Friends in real life, friends that I only know online, you are all special to me, and I’m very thankful for you all. That goes for my four legged friends, Boris and Olaf, too.

Finally, I’m very thankful for my fans! I love interacting with you on my Facebook page, and it’s also because of you that I was able to quit my job to work on my jewelry full time. To say ‘thank you’ to you all I’ll be offering 15% off and free shipping in my Etsy shop starting on Small Business Saturday (11/26) and going through Cyber Monday (11/28).

So Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you all have family and/or friends to spend the day with. I hope you have tons to eat and drink, and no dishes to do 🙂 Leave me a comment and tell me what you’re thankful for this year!

Get Down with the Sickness.

I don’t get sick very often. In fact, aside from the random ickies that last less than 24 hours, I haven’t been full on sick in… well… The last one I remember was in January of 2008. I remember because it was my birthday. What a great gift! When I do get sick, I get real sick. I guess it’s just a compilation of all sicknesses I didn’t get, all rolled into one. This one is no different.

I have not stepped foot into my studio all week! Monday morning brought me a sinus infection. It’s been my constant companion for five days now! Yesterday, I realized something interesting. If I were still employed outside of the house, I would be ok with being sick. I’d get to take days off, stay at home, rest, and feel bad for all the suckers at work who didn’t get sick and had to be there! However, now that I’m self employed, and the things I have to do are also the things I want to do, I want the sickness to be gone! No more naps! No more tissues! I broke the thermometer, so no more temperature taking! No more Tylenol! I will have another glass of orange juice, though. Thanks 🙂

I vow that today will be different! Today, I will get into the studio, if only long enough to make the earrings that jumped into my mind last night after the Tylenol PM had been ingested, so there was no getting up at that point. I also had a dream about a bracelet the other night. I’d really like to try working on that, too.

So why am I telling you this? Because if I write it down, I might actually do it! And if I’m going to write it down, I might as well share it, because that’s how I roll.

So in the illustrious words of Disturbed: Get up, come on get down with the sickness!

That and my dream vacations spots. Yes, that’s the planet Mars in there. I said dream vacation spots 🙂 Oh, I also have a pin board of things that make me giggle.

Happy Almost Halloween!

I just wanted to share this blog post: Just When You Thought it was Safe to Go Back in the Attic…*

My husband and I wrote this story several years ago. Well, he wrote it, I just told him about this tiny old farmhouse that used to be on my grandparent’s property in Star Valley, Wyoming. It’s a good tale.

My husband is such a talented writer. Currently, he works as a freelance writer, writing web content, blogs, etc. He’ll probably chastise me and tell me there’s more to it than that, and I’m sure there is. He loves his job, and I suspect that his job loves him. However, what I really want him to do is work on his creative writing, get published, and make mamma a million dollars!!

After you read the story (because really, why wouldn’t you?!), maybe you could leave him a comment on his blog and tell him to get his butt in gear and publish something already!

Happy almost Halloween!

My Etsy Shop Grand (re)Opening Giveaway!

Here it is! The long awaited (to me, anyway) giveaway for the grand re-opening of my Etsy shop! My shop was closed for a number of reasons. First, it needed a slight revamping. That’s done. Second, I was taking two classes at a time (an auditing class, and a government and non-profit accounting class — gag). Those are done! Finally, I had a full time job that was kind of in the way of putting all my energy into my work and my shop. Well, THAT’S done, too! I am self employed, and have nothing better to do but work on jewelry all day! Oh yeah… I have puppy potty training, and puppy “please stop biting me” training going on, too. Anyway, as I promised, like FOREVER ago, I’m doing a giveaway! Actually, a couple. I will do a giveaway every day (from Tuesday the 11th, through Saturday the 15th) at 7 PM MST. Here’s a run down of what prizes will be given away on what days:

Tuesday: 10% off anything in my shop!

Wednesday: A pair of copper Urban Beautification earrings, pictured below. (Winner will be announced early because I’m taking my husband to a concert for his birthday :))

Thursday: 15% off anything in my shop!

Friday: A ring! A delicate silver band with a copper bowl filled with blue and yellow enamel. Oooh… aaaah… Pictures to come (size 8).

Saturday: The grand prize! My Beauty in Decay III ring (size 7.25). This is a ring I would normally sell for around $125. Yours for FREE!

Beauty in Decay III

‘So just how do I win these crazy prizes?’ you might be asking. Well I’ll tell you.

Chances are you came to be reading this here blog by clicking a link on my Facebook page. If you didn’t, then you should. Anyway, on the Facebook link, there are three buttons: “Like,” “Comment,” and “Share.” Click share! (Although you’re certainly welcome to “Like” and “Comment,” too!) This will share my blog post link on your Facebook wall. Facebook is kindly enough to show me all of the shares my link is getting. Everyone who shares my link will get their name put into a hat (yes, literally, a hat) for the random drawing at 7 PM MST. If you win during the week, your name will go back into the hat on Saturday for a chance at the Grand Prize!

Want to get your name into the drawing twice?! I also have a link to my Etsy shop posted on Facebook. Everyone who shares that one will also be entered to win! If you share both, you’re entered for both!

Questions, comments, concerns, emotional outbursts? Feel free to comment on my blog or on Facebook, or email me at janefont@comcast.net.

Good luck! 😀

What I Did in My First Week

Well, not a lot, actually. This week was really all about settling in. I don’t feel self-employed. I feel like a bum! I’ve done some school work (at gun point!), did some grocery shopping (just the essentials), watched a Halloween-ish movie every night, worked on some new houses… and I guess that’s about it.

Oh, wait! I did make two new rings! This was the first one:

Orange Twig Setting Ring

Before you get all crazy and tell me that my setting is crooked, I know! It’s supposed to be 🙂 And I don’t mean that in a PeeWee Herman “I meant to do that” kind of way. It was actually supposed to be much more crooked, but I was more focused on making sure the setting was secure. The band is hammered sterling silver, and the setting is copper. The stone is a 5mm, bright orange, Padparadscha sapphire colored CZ. It took me three or four tries before I finally got it right. I call this the Twig Setting because in my mind, the setting is supposed to look like twigs or branches that are growing up and around the stone. Again, the focus was on the integrity of the setting.

I was super excited about my first prong setting for a small stone, that I had to immediately start on another one. On my next ring, the goal was to make the setting as organic (let’s not use the word crooked, ok?) as possible, and pay attention to other details, too.

Green Twig Setting ring

I did it! This setting is way more “organic.” I hammered and slightly flared the band so it would kind of resemble a tree stump. The vine comes out of the setting, goes all the way around, coils, and then ends in the setting. This is my new favorite setting, and I have several ideas of directions I want to take it. You can see more pictures of these two rings in my Flickr page to the right ———————->

Also, my shop should be reopened on Tuesday! Be on the lookout for that, because I’ll be doing at least one giveaway. News will be on my Facebook page and here.

The New Journey Begins!

I should be doing school work right now… but that can wait.

I just got home from work, for the last time. It was a lot harder to go than I thought it would be. I’ve only worked there for under a year and a half, but I’ve met so many people who have turned out to be very important to me. I’m really excited to start this new journey, and I have so many plans! But I’m still very sad that this journey is ended.

Speaking of plans, want to know what some of them are?

Obviously I’ll be making jewelry, jewelry, and MORE jewelry, but I’ll also be dabbling in a few other things. Some of you may remember the little abandoned houses I used to make and sell in my other shop: Mile Marker 13. There’s nothing there now, but I’ve been working on my houses again! Up until a week or two ago, I hadn’t made any houses in several months. I had one that was started, but was left to gather dust. Well, I finished that one, and I think it turned out awesome! I’ve made several more since then, and am currently working on a set of 5 tiny houses. I can’t wait to get these photographed and listed.

I’ve also purchased a couple types of clay because I want to try out some sculptures. I’ve done some in the past, and a couple that I really like. However, the clay I used is very brittle, so I’m not able to really finish the ones I’ve done. I’m hoping to find a clay that works out so I can do more of these. Interested in what my clay sculptures might look like? Check out this movie: Little Otik.

One journey I WON’T be sad to have end is school. I’m having to force myself to get my school work done. But I only have 6 more weeks of school and then I’ll TRULY be free!

Wow, I did almost a whole post without bombarding you with link after link! I thought this would be a really short post. To finish the post off, here’s a couple pictures of some of my houses that I’ve already sold. Hopefully I’ll have pictures of the new houses up later this weekend, or Monday or Tuesday, or you know… whenever!
